Managing App Transition

Over at EquipmentWatch we are planning our first major app overhaul in quite some time and we’ve been wrestling with how best to manage the app transition, as it’ll be a big one.

This morning we stumbled across a great interstitial that popped up in Etrade.com just after login (see below). A really simple combination of an animated gift with some simple ajax messaging, it popped up after login and right before access to the product, forcing an interaction.

It made us realize a few key questions:

  • How early should you start educate your users about an upcoming web app change?
  • What’s the frequency of communications before launch?
  • Do you force an interaction?

- More creatively, how can you build a marketing-driven story to drive excitement and PR before a new product launch?
